2006 02 23 Niland, Salton Sea Beach

Today I shot in the morning in Niland and in the evening in Salton Sea Beach. In the meantime I drove around exploring. Inland about 4 or 5 miles from the northeast shore of the sea is a place called "Slab City". It is all that is left of an old military base. All that is left are the slabs.. and a lot of campers, full or part time. I think this is another of those places that people go to more or less check out of civilization for a while. Here is a New York Times article about it. Here is another interesting little paper that mentioned Slab City. One of the most well known features of Slab City is Salvation Mountain, which is being worked on as I write..

The next 8 shots are of a couple of very cool flying machines that I watched for a while. They consist of a parachute attached to a frame and pushed by a propeller in a cage. They are powered by a small engine and can take off in about 75 feet. Very cool. Once aloft they are not very fast, but are very maneuverable and look like a great way to see things.

To the south of the Salton Sea is the Imperial Valley. It's almost entirely large scale agriculture. This is where the last of the Colorado River winds up, in the lemon groves and lettuce fields. A few shots.
